Additional Information / Summary:
This 1981 research for the Federal Highway Administration was conducted to investigate the operational effects of the cross-slope break between the travel lane and the outside shoulder on highway curves. The findings revealed the importance of shoulder slope and width in designing the shoulder to accomodate vehicle recoveries from errant travel onto to the outside shoulder of highway curves. Recommendations about design of cross-slope breaks, including treatment for special situations such as narrow shoulders, high superelevation, and rehabilitation project needs were derived from the findings.
