Additional Information / Summary:

This document provides guidance for the selection and application of pavement and roadway design parameters that can be used to minimize the potential for hydroplaning. The one factor that can be controlled by roadway and pavement design is water film thickness, as follows: controlling the cross slope and grade to reduce the distance water must flow before exiting the travel lanes; increasing the surface texture depth; removing water from the pavement using appurtenances within or at the edge of the pavement; and providing internal drainage with porous asphalt surfaces.
