Additional Information / Summary:
This 1986 investigation was primarily concerned with evaluating the perform-ance of ordinary (naive) driver's on their first encounter with a pavement edge drop. When the edge drop has a relatively vertical face, this study shows that naive drivers, attempting to recover from a scrubbing condition, may have significantly greater difficulty than indicated by earlier studies. The authors recommend that edge drops with a vertical face not exceed 3 inches and be posted for speeds no greater than 25 mph.
